Sermonline Help: Questions & Answers

Some Answers:

What kind of computer do I need to listen to the sermons online?

  • Any computer less than 10 years old should do, though it is easiest with computers less than 5 years old.
  • Almost any web browser will do, but Netscape / Mozilla / Firefox browsers currently have some problems. Other good ones are:
    • MS Internet Explorer
    • Apple Safari
    • Opera
  • Apple Macintosh computers, and Windows PCs are fine, as are Linux computers. We use standard MP3 files.
  • The most important thing you need is MP3 playing software, most of which is freely available. Some examples are:

How do I save a sermon onto my computer to listen later?

  • To save a file on your computer, right-click on a link and choose Save Target As... or Download Linked File As... or similar. (Control-click on a Mac).

How can I make a CD to listen to in a normal CD player?

  • You need a CD-Writer (sometimes called a CD-RW drive) and CD-writing software to produce an audio CD on your computer.
  • On an Apple computer (also should work on Windows)
    • Download Apple's free iTunes
      • import your downloaded audio files
      • create a playlist with the file(s) you want on the CD. (Make sure it's no longer than 80 minutes)
      • click Burn to create audio CDs.
    • That's what I have used myself on both Mac and Windows. In fact we use iTunes to create high quality audio CDs for sale from the original recordings.
  • On a Windows PC:
    • Use software which may have come with your CD-RW drive or computer like Nero or Adaptec Easy CD Creator.
    • Specify that you want to make an Audio CD (not a data CD) using the MP3 files as source files.
    • Apparently Windows Media Player makes it quite easy to make CDs too.

How can I find a sermon from a particular date?     and
How do I know when a sermon was preached, how long it is and how big the file is?

  • The best thing is to use the 'Sort by Date' popup menu at the top of the page, instead of Sorting by Series.
  • Extra details about each talk or sermon may be revealed to the right when you move the mouse pointer over the title of the talk. (May not work on all browsers yet.)
  • You can see the file size, length (to nearest minute) and date.
  • Also, each file when downloaded has a name that begins with the date, year-month-day-am/pm.
  • I chose to hide these extra details so as not to clutter the display.

How do I search for a Bible book or title?

  • Type what you are looking for into the search box near the top of the page and click Search

Downloading a file doesn't work. Why does it open in MS Excel or some other program?

  • Netscape, Mozilla, and Firefox browsers seem to have difficulties downloading the files.
  • Try a different browser or try right-clicking the links and choose Save Target As... or Download Linked File As... or similar. (Control-click on a Mac) instead of clicking the download arrow.

The talk doesn't sound right on my MP3 player

  • Try downloading higher quality versions using the menu near the top of each page.
  • We've had a few reports of the MP3 files not sounding right when they're downloaded onto MP3 players, and I want to figure out what is going wrong and if I can do anything about it.
  • So could you do 2 things if this affects you?
    • Try listening to the file on a computer (Mac or PC). Do you get the same problem?
    • email Media   and tell us what MP3 players you are using, describe the problem you have, tell us which files are worse than others.
  • I think the problem is that some MP3 players cannot properly play low bitrate MP3 files (I have one of these). This is a problem in the player not in the files, so there is not much we can do. Normally files play OK on a computer or a more expensive player. Feel free to ask me for more details.

A link doesn't work, the wrong file plays or I still have some other problem

What is podcasting?

  • Click here for more info about podcasting. It's just another way you can schedule sermon downloads, and if you have an iPod they'll be automatically loaded as soon as they're available.
  • Download Apple's iTunes
  • Then either:
    • Choose Subscribe to Podcast from the Advanced menu and enter the address:
      • http://www.tronmedia.org/audio/rss.php     or
      • http://www.tronmedia.org/audio/rss_hi.php     (higher quality version)
    • Or, search the podcast directory for St George's-Tron
  • iTunes downloads the sermons whenever they are updated and makes it very easy to make a CD of a sermon or sermons.
