The Thessalonians were A Baby Church facing immediate persecution. Paul sent this letter to encourage them in their new-found faith.
Opponents made it necessary for Paul to defend his apostolic calling and to underscore the necessity of Integrity in Gospel Work. The apostle and his companions were brave, sincere and loving preachers. Although concerned about their present lives, Eternal Salvation is Paul’s Top Priority. While enduring suffering, they still needed to be taught and to be filled with love for each other. He found it pressing to address the question, in view of the Lord’s return, What Happens to Christians when they die? He aimed to ensure they did not grieve like non-Christians and that they would encourage each other. Paul deals with The Day of the Lord which will be sudden. Believers, then, must always be ready. The letter ends with ethical teaching, part of which is to be rejoicing always, never ceasing in prayerfulness and to keep on learning. The apostle’s other concerns are the church’s mission and the final perseverance of the saints.
